My projects tend to move in complementary waves. When I was asked to design a medical office, it led to several more medical office projects. I was asked to design a dental office, and within the next six months, I was contracted to complete eight more dental offices, with seven more the following year.

This wave also happens when I start a restaurant or bar project. Before I know it, the next several months will be filled with appointments with the Health Department and Building & Safety, bringing someone’s dreams to life.

When I handed over the approved building plans to a new restaurant owner, I often asked how else I could help them. A question that arose more often than expected was whether I had connections with local merchant processors.

At the time, I didn’t, but that soon would change. I was working on a banquet hall project, and as luck would have it, the owner’s son had a merchant processing business. I explained that I wanted to offer my design clients credit card processing and merchant services as a convenience.

He told me he’d teach me the business if I took an UNPAID internship. Knowledge is power, so I quickly replied with an exuberant YES. The design work wave would always ebb and flow, and when project demand slowed, I interned with a local merchant processor to learn the trade.

My Boutique Merchant Service Company is marketed under VCCP Merchant Services. What does VCCP stand for? VCCP stands for Vegan Credit Card Processing. As a 30-plus-year vegan, I thought it would be a fun way to differentiate myself in a marketplace many consider bland and slightly dull.
